The world has reached an inflection point driven by renewed geopolitical tensions, the rising tide of populism, the backlash against globalisation and rapid technological change. Against this backdrop of uncertainty, approximately 500 business and thought
leaders from Asia and beyond convened at Singapore Summit 2017 to discuss solutions to pressing global issues and to examine ideas for deeper partnerships in the future economy.
Conversations at the plenary sessions of this year’s Summit highlighted the importance of: corporate leadership and a multi-stakeholder approach in navigating the possible scenarios of a new world order; upholding free trade and staying interconnected; and, fostering inclusive growth through appropriate policy decisions and harnessing technological advancements.
Intergenerational dialogue and succession was another important theme emphasised at Singapore Summit 2017 with the launch of the Singapore Summit Young Societal Leaders (YSL) Programme. A special plenary session featuring select members from the Programme’s inaugural class allowed YSLs to take the stage in voicing their perspectives on how to move society forward. Recognising that organic, innovative and cross-sectoral solutions are needed and that the next generation of leaders in Asia and around the world cannot function in silos, the Programme seeks to build a global community of young leaders whose talent and collaboration will achieve more as a whole than in parts. Participating YSLs were able to glean diverse perspectives from each other and from established leaders that can further inform their work of moulding the future of their societies.
Over 20 prominent local and international guests spoke at Singapore Summit 2017. Among them were Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan; Dr Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of Indonesia; and, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security of Singapore. Summing the mood at Singapore Summit 2017 on the criticality of international cooperation and cohesion, Dasho Tobgay shared the King of Bhutan’s advice that “No nation today can stand alone in achievement. Time is slowly telling us that there can be no lasting individual success without success as a community and there cannot be lasting national progress and success if it does not fit into a future of global peace, harmony, and equality. The world must progress together or fail together.”
